The ZIP format was created in 1989 by Phil Katz as a faster, open alternative to the proprietary ARC format. He released the format into the public domain.
A Lasting Legacy
Today, ZIP is deeply integrated into Windows, macOS, and Linux. It also forms the structural basis for modern document formats like .docx and .epub.
