Understanding Character Encodings: UTF-8 vs ASCII

The Baseline: ASCII

ASCII uses 7 bits to represent 128 characters, covering basic English letters and numbers. However, it completely fails for international languages and emojis.

The Global Standard: UTF-8

UTF-8 is a variable-width encoding that can represent every character in the Unicode standard. It is backwards compatible with ASCII and is the foundation of the modern, international web.
